Five hundred meters above Maebashi City, Gunma — a mugibuta (grain-fed pork) raised by a family, a plate of umami free of off-odor.

Toyama no Mugibuta is a Japanese brand pork (meigara-buta) from Nakanosawa, Kasukawa-machi, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture, managed by Toyama Yoton Co., Ltd. Breed / crossbreeding: Female (Landrace × Large White) × Male: Duroc (three-breed cross).

Toyama no Mugibuta (Toyama’s Barley-and-Wheat Pork) is a brand pork raised at Toyama Yoton, nestled on a highland at 500 meters above sea level in Kasukawacho, Maebashi City, Gunma Prefecture. At this open high-altitude farm with a sweeping view of the Kanto Plain, the family of Toyama Yoton Co., Ltd. keeps a devoted eye on each individual, raising them with care and time. The clear air and cool environment wrapped in lush greenery create a comfortable growing place for the pigs, with the free, low-stress environment firmly supporting their healthy growth.

The feed uses an abundance of cereal grains such as barley and wheat, with ingenuity to firmly draw out the inherent umami of the pork. The pork raised on a plant-based feed rich in cereal grains has a clean, non-cloying fat with virtually no off-odor — a defining characteristic.

The meat quality is moderately soft, with a rich umami seeping through with every chew — a straightforward, enjoyable flavor. The three-breed cross (Landrace × Large White × Duroc) pigs are raised slowly over 180 days — the balance of lean and fat is refined, producing a deeply flavorful finish that never tires.

Easy versatility in a wide range of preparations including stir-fry, grilling, shabu-shabu, hot pot, and braised dishes is also a major appeal. The adaptability to Japanese, Western, and Chinese cuisine of any kind is precisely what makes this pork treasured on daily tables. Please do try this highland mugibuta representing Gunma — raised with family love in rich nature — at your home.
