A pure red pork of pure-bred Duroc lineage — fine marbling and rich, mellow umami.

Date no Junsui Akabuta is a Japanese brand pork (meigara-buta) from Tome City, Miyagi Prefecture, managed by Izunuma Agricultural Products Co., Ltd. Breed / crossbreeding: Duroc (purebred).

On the banks of Izunuma Lake — a Ramsar Convention-registered wetland of international importance in northern Miyagi Prefecture — stands Izunuma Agricultural Products Co., Ltd., guided by the philosophy of ‘transforming agriculture into a food business.’ The company’s brand pork, Date no Junsui Akabuta, is a pure Duroc breed ‘Shimofuri Red’ — developed by Miyagi Prefecture’s Livestock Experiment Station — raised not as a first-generation cross but as a purebred, giving rise to the name ‘red pig’ (akabuta) from the color of its coat. Unlike the typical three-breed cross pig, the challenges of raising a purebred — lower litter numbers, disease risk — are overcome through a designated compound feed based on Date no Junsui Akabuta rearing standards at both the company’s own and contract farms, with absolutely no antibiotics or dewormers used from the early fattening stage.

The meat quality this produces is exceptional: the lean is a pale pink with fine marbling spread throughout, combining rich flavor, tenderness, and outstanding juiciness. The fat is rich in oleic acid — gentle on the body — with a low melting point that allows it to dissolve smoothly the moment it touches the mouth. Glutamic acid and inosinic acid, key umami components, are also abundant — with every bite, sweetness and fragrance fill the mouth.

Quality control is exhaustive: before shipment, every animal is visually inspected for marbling, meat firmness, color, and fat quality, and a ‘kenku’ (taste test) in which responsible staff cook and personally assess the loin’s flavor and texture is carried out for every single animal. Please enjoy Date no Junsui Akabuta at your table — a pork that consistently maintains a high standard through this double quality control.
