Hokkaido’s pride — a brand pork from the largest SPF pig production site in the prefecture, raised on a large scale.

Toyoura Pork is a Japanese brand pork (meigara-buta) from Toyoura Town, Abuta District, Hokkaido, managed by Toyako Agricultural Cooperative. Breed / crossbreeding: Female (Landrace ♀ × Large White ♂) × Male: Duroc.

Toyoura Pork is a brand SPF pork with Toyoura Town in Abuta District, Hokkaido, as its primary production area. SPF stands for ‘Specific Pathogen Free’ — meaning the pigs are free of specific pathogens. Toyoura Town is known as the largest SPF pig production area in Hokkaido, accounting for approximately one quarter of all SPF pig production across the entire prefecture. Management is handled by Toyako Agricultural Cooperative, which raises pigs under strict hygiene management at two designated fattening sites: Gesund Farm and Freude Farm.

The farm name ‘Gesund’ means ‘healthy, sturdy, and energetic’ in German — and true to its name, production is carried out with pig health as the absolute priority. The designated compound feed incorporates cereal grains such as barley and wheat at 10% or more, reflecting a thoroughgoing commitment to producing healthy, safe, and reliable pork.

The meat quality is finely grained and tender, and is widely appreciated for retaining its texture even when cooled. Pork off-odor is almost entirely absent, and within a clean, light flavor lies a deep umami. This makes it particularly well suited to preparations like shabu-shabu that allow the ingredient’s flavor to shine — the umami that infuses into the broth can also be savored and enjoyed.

The shipping age is approximately 165 days, and the fine-quality meat born from slow rearing reaches many tables as a brand pork supporting Hokkaido’s rich food culture. Every June, Toyoura Pork is a featured favorite at the ‘Ichigo Buta Niku Matsuri’ (Strawberry and Pork Festival) held in Toyoura Town, drawing many visitors from within and outside Hokkaido who come seeking its flavor.
