Nurtured by the pure streams and old-tree forests of Okukuji — a brand pork with gleaming white fat.
Bunabuta is a Japanese brand pork (meigara-buta) from Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture, managed by Hitachi Bokujo Co., Ltd. Breed / crossbreeding: Female (Landrace × Large White) × Male: Duroc.
Bunabuta (Beech Pork) is a brand pork raised in Daigo Town, nestled in the mountains of the Okukuji region in northern Ibaraki Prefecture. In this land blessed with pure natural water welling up from the Yamizo mountain system and clear air, Hitachi Bokujo Co., Ltd. raises each animal with devoted individual care. A single ancient beech (buna) tree stands on the farm, and the brand takes its name from this symbolic tree. This tranquil, gentle natural environment provides the pigs with ideal growth conditions of minimal stress.
The breed is a three-breed cross — Landrace × Large White sows with Duroc male — grown slowly over 175 days. The feed is an original blend of corn, soybean, and coconut-derived components, with the composition fine-tuned through regular lipid analysis — maintaining a consistently stable meat quality over many years.
The finished meat is characterized by a beautiful appearance: white, lustrous fat and a vivid salmon-pink lean. Raised drinking natural water, the pigs have minimal characteristic pork off-odor, making them ideally suited to preparations that make the most of the flavor of the ingredient itself. Even in simple salt-grilled or stir-fried preparations, the sweetness and umami of the fat are clearly pronounced — and with a single bite, the rich nature of Okukuji can be felt.
Distributed primarily through Tokyo Meat Market and Ibaraki Prefecture Meat Market, approximately 16,000 head are shipped annually. Please do bring Bunabuta — nurtured by the clear waters and lush environment of Okukuji — to your table at least once.
