The pride of Noda Village, Iwate — a brand pork raised from the clean lineage of SPF pigs on an original feed.
Nanbu Fukura Buta is a Japanese brand pork (meigara-buta) from Noda, Noda Village, Kunohe District, Iwate Prefecture, managed by Noda Farm Co., Ltd. Breed / crossbreeding: Female (Landrace ♀ × Large White ♂) × Male: Duroc.
Nanbu Fukura Buta is a representative brand pork of Iwate, produced by Noda Farm Co., Ltd. in Noda Village, Kunohe District, Iwate Prefecture. With brand regulations established in 1986, it has a long history rooted in a clean bloodline derived from SPF (Specific Pathogen Free) pigs. True to its name — meaning ‘a pig that brings happiness to the Nanbu region’ — it has long been cherished as a local pride.
The most distinctive feature of the rearing is its advanced hygiene management and commitment to creating an environment with stress eliminated to the greatest possible extent. Through careful management that draws on the pigs’ inherent immunity, the mortality rate due to illness is kept to less than half the national average, and the amount of medication required is minimal — earning high consumer regard as a safe and reliable pork.
The feed is based on a designated compound feed, with a proprietary addition of seaweed powder — rich in natural minerals — and sesame. Citric acid is added to maintain an acidic intestinal environment and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria. Furthermore, the complete exclusion of fishmeal and meat and bone meal as animal protein sources eliminates gamey off-odor, bringing out the inherent richness and deep umami of pork.
The shipping age is 145–175 days — relatively early — and the finished meat quality is tender with a full, deep richness. Approximately 10,000 head are slaughtered annually at Iwachiku and Kuji Meat Processing Plant and distributed through JA ZEN-NOH Iwate Prefectural Headquarters. It is also popular as a furusato nozei return gift, reaching tables nationwide well beyond the home region of Noda Village. Since trademark registration in 2008, it has steadily expanded its fanbase as a hallmark of quality and trust.
