Nurtured by Ishigaki Island pineapple — a rare southern-island brand pork carrying Agu blood.

Painubuta is a Japanese brand pork (meigara-buta) from Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture, managed by Yaeyama Farm Co., Ltd. Breed / crossbreeding: F1 cross of Agu (sire) × Western breed (dam).

Painubuta is a brand pork raised by Yaeyama Farm in Ishigaki City, Okinawa Prefecture. The name means ‘pig of the southern island’ in the Okinawan dialect, and the pigs are produced as an F1 cross with the rare Agu — known as a native Ryukyu breed — as the sire and a Western breed as the dam.

Its greatest feature is the farm’s own original fermented feed, made by fermenting the pomace left after pressing juice from Ishigaki-grown pineapples. Born of the farm’s circular agriculture, which spans everything from pineapple cultivation to livestock farming, this feed supports the tender meat and rich umami unique to Painubuta.

The meat is fine-grained and tender, and because it retains its moisture well even when heated, it offers a juicy flavor with juices overflowing the more you chew. The fat has a low melting point, melting away the moment it enters the mouth and spreading an elegant sweetness. It also excels nutritionally: oleic acid, which determines the quality of the fat, is said to be more than twice that of ordinary pork, vitamin B1 about 1.4 times, and the meat is also rich in iron.

On the farm, the pigs are raised at ease in smaller numbers than at a typical pig farm, with careful feeding and management that observes the condition of each animal. As a result, annual shipments are a mere 500 head or so, making this a rare brand pork that is not easy to come by. As for how to eat it, shabu-shabu — which lets you fully enjoy the sweetness of the fat and the melting texture — pairs well, and the farm’s hamburg steak, with cumulative sales exceeding 250,000 units, is also popular as a signature product full of meat juices. Please try Painubuta, packed with the blessings of the southern island.
