The 18 Brands That Can Be Called Kurobuta: Japan’s Purebred Berkshire Pork

PUREBRED BERKSHIRE

Only a handful of Japan’s pigs
can truly be called Kurobuta.

You may have seen “Kurobuta pork” on the menus of fine restaurants, sometimes billed as the Wagyu of pork. In Japan, the name follows the meat labeling standards: only purebred Berkshire pork may be labeled Kurobuta (“black pig”). Out of all the brand pork we cover across Japan, just 18 brands qualify. This page lists every brand that can carry the Kurobuta name under Japan’s meat labeling standards — and the brands that carry Berkshire blood — compiled from the breeding data of every brand in our database.

Kurobuta Basics

“Kurobuta” is not a breed name — it is a title that only one breed is allowed to carry.

Why “black pig”?

Because Berkshire pigs have black coats — with six white points (snout, tail tip and four feet), known in Japanese as roppaku, the breed’s telltale mark. The meat itself is not black; in fact, its fine texture and pure white fat are exactly what the breed is prized for. The Berkshire originates from Berkshire, England.

Who can use the name?

Under Japan’s meat retail quality standards, revised in 1999, only pork from purebred Berkshire pigs may be labeled “Kurobuta.” Crossbred pigs cannot use the name, even if they carry Berkshire blood.

Kurobuta around the world

In the United States, Berkshire pork raised in the US is sold under the name “Kurobuta.” The breed is shared; the bloodlines, feed and brand standards behind each label are not.
