Satsuma Rokkoku Ton (Satsuma Six-Grain Pork), raised receiving the rich bounty of Kagoshima’s nature, is a designated-farm-produced brand pork in Kagoshima Prefecture handled by Ito Ham Yonekyu Holdings. The defining characteristic is — true to the name — using an original designated compound feed well-balancing 6 types of grain. Carefully raised on a feed with abundant sweet potato (kansho) — a Kagoshima specialty — generously added to the diverse grains of corn, barley, wheat, rice, milo, and soybeans. The idea of blending Kagoshima specialty sweet potato is a concept unique to this region — playing an important role in bringing natural sweetness and richness to the pork. The rich flavor derived from sweet potato transfers to the fat — a deeply flavored taste where a melting sweetness and umami in the mouth harmonize is realized. The breed is an F1 cross pig — Duroc (known for excellent meat quality) crossed with a sow (Landrace female × Large Yorkshire male). Having both the rich fat sweetness Duroc possesses and the growth performance/meat productivity of the cross sow — the meat color is beautiful, the texture soft, and eating substance sufficient. By raising over the fattening period of approximately 180–190 days — the authentic umami of pork is concentrated. Pork demonstrating full potential whether grilled, simmered, or deep-fried is versatile — active across a wide range from home cooking to restaurant dishes.
