Carrying the genes of the wild boar — a rare, premium brand pork born in Tokushima Prefecture.
Awa Tonton is a high-class brand pork with a lineage unique in Japan — independently developed by Tokushima Prefecture Livestock Research Division using the advanced technology of DNA breeding. Focusing on the excellent meat quality characteristics that wild boar inherently possess — utilizing the technology of incorporating that DNA gene region into pigs — the breed was finally fixed in FY Heisei 25 (2013). A completely new concept brand in a class of its own compared to conventional standard pork. The defining feature is the beautiful meat color with a vivid redness, and the finely-grained meat quality. With high water retention — the fluffy, juicy texture firmly continues even after cooking. The fat is white and taut — entering the mouth, an elegant, subtle sweetness gently spreads — a defining appeal. In the late fattening stage, a dedicated compound feed centered on wheat grains is given — further drawing out the inherent flavor and richness of pork. Production is limited only to designated farms within Tokushima Prefecture certified by the Awa Tonton Brand Establishment Countermeasures Council — with thorough individual management of each head. Furthermore, utilizing the possession of wild boar-derived DNA sequences — authenticity confirmation through DNA testing is also possible. A traceability system from farm through to retail outlet is also in place — making trust in quality certain. Annual shipments approximately 500 head — very rare — the rarity also enhancing the special feeling of this brand. A unique brand pork representing Tokushima Prefecture — wild, rustic flavor and premium pork umami magnificently harmonized.
