Karaimo Don (Sweet Potato Don Pork) is a pure Berkshire black pig raised with 74+ years of history and commitment by Kuwasuiru Livestock Co., Ltd. at Ikoma Highland Farm in Kobayashi City, Miyazaki Prefecture. The name’s origin comes from the regional word calling sweet potato ‘karaimo’ in southern Kyushu — with the producer’s pride in using sweet potato abundantly in the feed embedded. The foothills of the Kirishima mountain range where the farm is located is an area blessed with rich nature — using the clear water of the Kirishima mountain foothills selected as one of Japan’s 100 Famous Spring Waters — the pigs are carefully raised in a free-roaming environment. For the feed — only a specially blended original formulation is used including southern Kyushu-produced sweet potato, company-made original yeast, antibacterial tea leaves, charcoal regulating intestinal environment, immunity-elevating seaweed, calcium, and more. The rearing environment also has thoroughgoing commitment — in addition to playing music in the farm to reduce pig stress — fine-grained attention is paid to management of size, cleanliness, temperature, and humidity as well. The black pig — slowly raised over 260 days, a long time — finishes as a specialty combining finely-grained soft meat quality with fat sweetness and deep umami.
