Aikoupu Ton is a brand pork produced at contract farms in Shiwa Town and Yahaba Town, Shiwa District, Iwate Prefecture. The Aikoupu Ton Producers’ Association, which launched direct-from-producer initiatives in 1990, continues production under consistent quality management in cooperation with contract farms from its base within the JA Iwate Chuuo Livestock Division — a trusted brand pork long enjoyed throughout Iwate Prefecture. With a history spanning over 35 years, it has a solid track record of directly connecting consumers and farms through direct production-area delivery. The greatest defining feature is the producers’ unwavering commitment to safety and reliability. No antibiotics or antibacterial agents are used for the four months before shipment, and the designated compound feed uses non-GMO IP corn and domestically-grown feed rice as primary ingredients. By limiting the protein source in the feed to plant-based materials, the characteristic off-odor of pork is suppressed, resulting in a balanced, easy-to-eat meat quality that achieves both umami-rich lean and an elegantly sweet fat. The breed is primarily a three-breed cross of Landrace × Large Yorkshire sows with Duroc boars, also utilizing Zenno High-Cope SPF pigs. Fattened slowly over approximately 180 days, the density and umami of the meat are thoroughly drawn out. Approximately 15,000 head are shipped annually, with distribution centered on Iwate Prefecture.
