Megumino Pork, produced in Miyagi Prefecture, is the brand pork of ‘Megumino’ — the direct-from-producer brand of Miyagi Seikatsu Cooperative. The Megumino Pork Production Council, as the management body, works in cooperation with registered producers throughout Miyagi Prefecture to manage the entire process from piglet production through to shipment under a unified, consistent system. Traceability is ensured for each producer, with a system in place to track back to the individual producer for every animal. The terminal sire breed is ‘Shimofuri Red’ — a breed developed over 8 years by Miyagi Prefecture’s Livestock Experiment Station — and the richly marbled, finely-grained, tender meat quality is a major appeal. The backdrop to this tenderness lies in the characteristics of ‘Shimofuri Red,’ which is rich in oleic acid. In terms of rearing, a designated compound feed free of antibiotics and synthetic antibacterial agents is used from three months of age onward, with a thoroughgoing commitment to safe and reliable pork production. Furthermore, in the late fattening stage, Miyagi-grown feed rice is incorporated, further drawing out the richness and sweetness of the meat while also working to reduce the use of imported corn. The use of feed rice also contributes to realizing circular agriculture through cooperation with local farmers. Shipping age is approximately 180 days — set relatively long — with slow rearing to develop full umami and meat quality. Approximately 18,000 head are distributed annually through channels including Sendai Meat Market and delivered to Miyagi residents’ tables through Miyagi Co-op.
