Raised on Duzhong tea and a circular farming system — a clean, pristine brand pork from the foothills of Mount Iwate.
Iwate Sanroku Kenko Ton Kokumasa Tochu Tea Pork is a brand pork produced by Komakusa Farm Co., Ltd. in Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture. Founded in 1970, this long-established pig farm maintains a large-scale production system of approximately 3,000 productive sows and approximately 85,000 head shipped annually — while implementing thorough quality and hygiene management. The defining feature is the addition of finely powdered leaves of tochu (Eucommia ulmoides), self-cultivated in Hachimantai City, Iwate Prefecture, to the feed from when the pigs reach 70 kg in the late fattening stage through to shipment. Tochu is a deciduous tree known for health benefits including blood pressure suppression and reduction of LDL cholesterol; when given to pigs, it suppresses the characteristic off-odor of pork, resulting in a finely-grained, tender meat quality and an elegantly sweet fat. For disease risk management, a ‘three-site all-in, all-out production system’ is employed — managing breeding, weaning, and fattening at independently operated farms — achieving PRRS (Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome) free status. Furthermore, pig manure is composted and provided to neighboring farmers, and feed rice grown with that compost is returned to the pigs — a circular resource agriculture system that is recognized for its commitment to sustainable pig farming. The breed is a WLD three-breed cross (Large Yorkshire × Landrace × Duroc), with a shipping age of approximately 180 days. Sales are channeled through long-established butcher Yokokawa Meat Co., Ltd., and the pork is also selected as a furusato nozei (hometown tax donation) return gift, making it widely enjoyed within and outside Iwate Prefecture.
