Akagi Pork is a brand pork representing Joshu (Gunma), nurtured in the rich nature of the Akagi mountain foothills in Gunma Prefecture. Production is managed by certified farmers of the Akagi Pork Production Cooperative, raising each animal with devoted care at 6 farms within Gunma Prefecture, with the absolute priority of giving no stress to the pigs, under thorough hygiene management and vaccination programs. The key to rearing is the proprietary plant-based dedicated feed ‘New Akagi Pork’ — containing 15% or more barley — given continuously from approximately 120 days of age through to shipment, with no animal-based feed whatsoever. The abundant Vitamin E derived from the barley gradually permeates the pork, elevating the quality of the fat and firmly drawing out an elegant sweetness and fragrant aroma. When eaten, the fat is sweet and refreshingly clean, with virtually no sense of cloyingness. The lean is characterized by high water retention, good firmness, and attractive color. It does not easily harden with heat, and the umami is not impaired even when cooled — demonstrating its true value in a wide range of preparations including roast pork and pork skewer fry.
